RALEIGH – RIoT’s Fall 2019 RIoT Accelerator Program (RAP) includes Internet of Things companies that are tackling everything from taking down pesky backyard pests to better protecting newborns in the NICU.
The RIoT Accelerator Program is industry and stage agnostic, but we are looking for interesting, viable IoT solutions and strong teams. This cycle we received the highest volume of applicants to date.

These eight companies came out of RIoT’s most competitive application cycle yet, both in terms of number of applicants and maturity of companies and founders.
This applicant pool was also RIoT’s most diverse to date. Geographically, startups from across North Carolina and the greater Southeast applied. RIoT also attracted applicants from as far as California, Mexico and Israel. Industries represented ranged from industrial/manufacturing, consumer product, energy, medical device, smart cities, agriculture, and textiles.
The eight incoming cohort represents a variety of industries and backgrounds. Teams hail from the Triangle, Charlotte, Virginia, and California, and are working on technology solutions in the energy, healthcare, consumer product, and textiles industries. RIoT expects the founders will leverage the diversity of the cohort to learn and grow together over the 12-week intensive program starting September 9.

Founder Desmond Wiggan leads Charlotte-based BatteryXchange, a kiosk rental platform for convenient on-the-go cell phone charging. Currently targeting the events market, BatteryXchange pilots have seen as many as 30% of total event attendees use their charging solution.
Continuous Precision Medicine is a veteran-led startup working to prevent opioid misuse. CPM uses predictive algorithms and decision support tools to help healthcare providers and patients work together to avoid the risks of developing dependencies on prescription narcotics. Founder Steven Walther recently closed a seed round and secured 4 pilot sites for the CPM solution.
Eric Zothner identified an opportunity for better at-home pest control while operating a spray services business. Green Pro Partners is now enhancing pest control with an automated spray system that uses all-natural, toxic-free spray to target mosquitoes.
Brothers Michael and Brian Bender have developed an in-toilet sensor to monitor health metrics. Intake was recently awarded two Phase 1 SBIR grants to advance their technology development, and plan to leverage RAP to explore different go to market strategies for the device in medical and consumer applications.
DeAndrea Salvador started nonprofit Renewable Energy Transition Initiative (RETI) to support and educate communities around energy conservation. The Charlotte-based founder and former TED fellow is now taking her learning from RETI to create JouleScout, a demand response solution that leverages dynamic incentives to better align utility providers and consumers.
Kilo Medical Solutions began as a class project for VCU graduate students Joshna Seelam, Kashyap Venuthurupalli, and Aniket Kulkarni. The team has developed a better covering for NICU isolettes that standardizes the lighting environment for premature infants.
Next Systems is a textiles concept solutions company focused on research commercialization for on-body sensors. Founders Jennifer Peavey and Jess Jur have first developed a multi-modal sensing garment for industrial applications, to monitor long-term health trends and reduce workload stress.
OpenEVSE has developed a universal electric vehicle charging station that can dynamically manage energy usage. OpenEVSE has deployed charging stations worldwide sense 2011, and the company, led by Chris Howell, is relocating permanently to North Carolina.
Through RAP, startups participate in a rigorous curriculum and leverage RIoT’s network of 80 corporate sponsors. Our partners regularly come through RIoT Labs to teach, mentor, and provide technical resources. Sponsors like Ubidots, Particle, Arrow, and Microsoft are offering free or subsidized technical support and tools to RAP startups.
